Each army is led by a hero and consists of up to seven stacks of creatures raised in towns or recruited in countryside. They are used to build new buildings in your towns, to improve existing buildings, to buy armies, etc. The resources (gold, wood, ore, gems, crystal, mercury, and sulfur) can be found mostly in mines and are gathered once a day. Each town has a theme and can only raise the type of creatures appropriate to that theme.
It involves capturing and developing towns, gathering resources, assembling armies and sending them into combat. Heroes of Might and Magic III is a turn-based strategic war game, set up in a classical role-playing game Environment. From 1 (lousy) to 10 (perfect) - the more votes the better! Whenever you play a map you've downloaded from Celestial Heavens or MapHaven, it *really* helps if you go back to the website afterwards and submit a rating for that map.
The flip side of this coin is where you can help. When you're downloading maps one by one from Celestial Heavens or MapHaven, you'll find that you can search only for maps with high ratings - that means that other people think they're good maps. You've seen a few people recommend their personal favourites. There are still varying qualities of maps, of course. The vast majority of pointless maps just don't make it through that filter the mapmakers can't be bothered. That's why AstralWizard, Celestial Heavens, and MapHaven all require maps to be *playtested* - played to completion by someone other than the mapmaker. The most map sites are polluted with maps made by kids, who thought it would be cool to make a map which would feature their name in the contours, or a map that is made up of 5 square islands, each of different terrain, each containing a castle and full of lvl 4 artifacts scattered all around. So I thought that maybe there's an official map pack somewhere out there, but apparently there isn't.Īnd if there are maps that are better than those made by 3DO, I haven't found any of them yet. But of course noone will want to copy/paste the names of all the maps they have. If anyone has the full HOMM3 with the expansions and hasnt dloaded any maps or maybe just a few, I would like to get a list of the maps they have in their folder. I only have the Heroes of Might and Magic 3 CD, not the CDs of the expansions so I can't reinstall.
